Finding your rate
This calculator doesn't guess your rate, because it can depend on exactly where you buy. In some states, cities, counties or districts add their own tax on top of the state rate. For example, Texas charges a 6.25% state rate and local jurisdictions can add up to 2%, for a combined maximum of 8.25%. California's statewide rate is 7.25%, and district taxes from 0.10% to 2.00% are added in most areas.
The quickest place to find your combined rate is a recent receipt from the same store. Your state's revenue department also publishes its rates.

- TaxPrice × rate ÷ 100, rounded to the cent. $24.99 × 0.06 = $1.4994, so the tax is $1.50.
- TotalPrice + tax. $24.99 + $1.50 = $26.49.
- Price before taxTotal ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100). $53.50 ÷ 1.07 = $50.00. The calculator then checks that the price plus its rounded tax really adds back up to your total.
A store that taxes each item separately and then adds them up can land a cent or two away from tax worked out on the whole receipt. If your receipt is off by a cent, that is usually why.

Questions
- How do I calculate sales tax?
- Multiply the price by the rate as a decimal. At 8.25%, $100 × 0.0825 = $8.25 in tax, so you pay $108.25.
- How do I take sales tax out of a total?
- Divide the total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. A $53.50 total at 7% was $53.50 ÷ 1.07 = $50.00 before tax. Subtracting 7% of the total gives the wrong answer ($49.76).
- Why is there no list of state rates here?
- In states like Texas and California, local taxes are added to the state rate, so a state number alone can be wrong for your purchase. Your receipt or your state's revenue department has the combined rate.
- Is sales tax charged on the sale price or the original price?
- This calculator, and the discount calculator, apply tax to the price you actually pay after discounts. If your receipt shows something different, go by the receipt.
