Money is rounded to the cent, with half a cent rounding up. The preset buttons are shortcuts, not advice: pick whatever percent you want.

Before tax or after tax

Some people tip on the amount before tax and some on the total with tax. Neither is a rule, so this calculator lets you pick. The gap between the two is the tip percent times the tax: on a $64.95 bill that includes $4.95 tax, 20% before tax is $12.00 and 20% after tax is $12.99.

To tip before tax, enter the tax from your receipt. If you leave it blank, the tip is taken on the bill total.

  1. TipBase × tip percent ÷ 100, rounded to the cent. $48 × 0.20 = $9.60.
  2. TotalBill + tip. $48 + $9.60 = $57.60.
  3. SplitTotal ÷ people. When it doesn't divide evenly, some people pay one cent more so the shares add up to the exact total. Round up instead raises each share to the next whole dollar, and the extra goes to the tip.

Worked examples

  1. What is a 20% tip on $48?

    A 20% tip on $48.00 is $9.60, so the total is $57.60.

    $48.00 × 0.2 = $9.60 tip
    $48.00 + $9.60 = $57.60

  2. What is an 18% tip on $86.40 split 4 ways?

An 18% tip on $86.40 is $15.55, so the total is $101.95. Split 4 ways, that’s $25.48 each, and 3 people pay $25.49 to cover the last cents.

    $86.40 × 0.18 = $15.55 tip
    $86.40 + $15.55 = $101.95
    $101.95 ÷ 4 = $25.48 with 3 cents left over

  3. 20% tip before tax: $64.95 bill with $4.95 tax

A 20% tip on the $60.00 before tax is $12.00, so the total is $76.95.

    $64.95 − $4.95 tax = $60.00 before tax
    $60.00 × 0.2 = $12.00 tip
    $64.95 + $12.00 = $76.95

  4. 20% tip after tax: $64.95 bill with $4.95 tax

A 20% tip on the $64.95 total with tax is $12.99, so the total is $77.94.

    $64.95 × 0.2 = $12.99 tip
    $64.95 + $12.99 = $77.94

  5. 15% tip on $73.20, rounded up for 3 people

A 15% tip on $73.20 is $10.98, so the total is $84.18. Rounded up, each person pays $29.00 and the total is $87.00, which makes the tip $13.80 (about 18.85%).

    $73.20 × 0.15 = $10.98 tip
    $73.20 + $10.98 = $84.18
    $28.06 rounded up to $29.00 each × 3 = $87.00

Questions

How do I work out a 20% tip in my head?
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. On $48, 10% is $4.80, so 20% is $9.60. For 15%, add half of the 10% amount: $4.80 + $2.40 = $7.20.
How is the bill split when it doesn't divide evenly?
The total is divided to the cent and the leftover cents go to some of the people, one cent each. $101.95 split 4 ways is $25.48 each, with 3 people paying $25.49, which adds up to exactly $101.95.
What does rounding up do to the tip?
It raises the total (or each person's share) to the next whole dollar and adds the difference to the tip. A $57.60 total with a 20% tip on $48 becomes $58.00, a $10.00 tip, which is about 20.83% of the bill.
Does this calculator tell me how much I should tip?
No. It does the math for whatever percent you choose. The 15%, 18%, 20% and 22% buttons are there for speed, and Custom takes any other percent.
